Title: Land of Hope and Glory? - Shadowrun Narrative Game
Post by: Insomniac on April 23, 2007, 02:26:00 am
London.  The Smoke.  Capital of His Majesty's empire...or what's left of it.  This sprawling metroplis still has pride in her proud history, since it's all most Brits have left to cling to.  Since the Green Party and Druidic Council claimed parliament decades ago, the shape of the empire has quite been the same.  The loss of Ireland, a series of nuclear meltdowns and the Black Tide has left the once-proud nation in a state of toxic disrepair.  Smog and acid rain threaten the city on a daily basis.  The government tried to erect a dome of steel and polymers over the city's core, only to have it destroyed in a terrorist attack, leaving a steel ribcage looming over the central city.

Society is split into several sections, with the wealthy and powerful in the cities center and growing increasingly destitute as you head to the fringes.  As you cross the Thames, the Westway slums predominate the outskirts, with the exception of  the "West End" and the "Villages" where the corporations dominate the landscape.  In the east looms the Lambeth Containment Zone and the ruins of the Angel Towers Arcology, where the starved and forgotten masses squat in whatever real estate they can find.  The government  has been in a steady state of decline since the death of the crown princes and the abdication of the throne by King Charles III, marking the end of the house of Windsor.  Much of the nation has been marked as either toxic or irradiated, and much has also been marked as Wild lands, where the Druids are using magic to restore pristine green areas, which always seem to end up hostile towards humanity.

Many in London's sprawling landscape have no idea the empire is struggling, as life carries on in London as it always has.  Unlike the bulk of the world, The UK has kept their hard currency, instead of switching fully over to wireless transfers of nuyen like every other advanced nation.  Those in her outskirts know perfectly well that the Druidic council has lost control of the country and work every day and exploiting the gaps in King George's once-mighty nation.

Macaulay picked at his teeth idly, lying down on the hard wooden surface of the shack he was inhabiting. A lazy smile drifted pleasantly on his face as he waited for the others to arrive; normally he wasn’t the first one to turn up, some horrible misfortune must have befallen everyone.

“Bored.” He stated to no-one.

He stopped messing around with his teeth and rolled across the ground to the lone table in the room, grabbing it securely with one arm. With a quick pull, it fell onto him, making him smile even wider with the pressure it created. He reached even further along to grab a chair, and pulled that onto him to.

Lying there, he chuckled to himself. He might pretend to be dead or something when they come in. Or maybe not. Maybe he should lie down for a bit before suddenly throwing the table at them.

Macaulay practiced his ‘dead’ look, lolling his tongue out and rolling his eyes up. How childish. Shoving the furniture off of himself and into a disused, rusted old cooker, he went to lean on a wall instead.

“Gotta look respectable.” He chided himself with a smile, wishing he brought his shades with him today.

Muninn studied the abandoned building that was according to the matrix map the meeting point. Despite the run down appearance the walls and roof looked sturdy. Two of the windows had been border up and the outside door was swinging on it hinges ever so slightly.

With a slight moment with his hand he changed his eye to infrared. Looking over the building again Muninn found one warm body by the back wall. Somebody was there already. Reverting the eye back to normal vision he went and silently entered trough the door. A few paces on was another door, leading to the meeting place.

Stepping trough Muninn spotted the other immediately. The other was dressed well tough he could spot a small hole where the jacket should have another button.
Nodding at the stranger Muninn went and righted up the chair. He reached into his left pocket and pulled out a bag of nuts. Pushing the chair against the wall as he took a few almonds out and ate them. Just before he sat down he offered the bag to the other runner.

Blurb reread the little text file with the meeting point on it in his mind, seeing no correlation between it, and where he now was. A gust of wind blew through the the street, making Blurb shiver. He zipped up his jacket against the cold and proceeded on, walking around for half an hour now.

The note said to meet in an abandoned building, which was no big help. ALL the buildings were abandoned here. He sighed in frustration. This should not happen! He had earned a respectable reputation in Europort's seedy underground and the slightly less underground Groningen. And every time, directions had been clear and concise. This damned map felt more like a labyrinth than directions....

...wait a minute....

Blurb turned the map on it's end. Now the buildings matched. The big neon sign for some Saeder-Krupp product, the pileup of crashed cars, the burnedout cafe. It all seemed so obvious now! Blurb could hit himself on the head.

He hurried to the designated building, finding two people already inside.

"Hey, sorry I'm late, got a little lost back there."

"Oh, don't ya be worrying 'bout that," Macaulay said with a comforting smile, "Can't be helped if using a map is beyond your ability, right?"

Noticing that he was being offered a nut, he reached towards the bag, taking a couple out and rolling them around in his mouth languidly.

'I wonder if I'm allergic...' He thought to himself, before spitting them into the air to see if he could hit the sink on the other side of the room.

Taking out the bag again he offered some to the new runner.

“Muninn. You are?” he said to the room in general nodding at both.

Blurb glared at the mean-spirited welcome he received from the first runner he saw. He looked unkempt, unprofessional. He had an expression of arrogant superiority. Blurb immediately disliked him. Those kind of people got their teammates killed.

The other was considerably more friendly, and looked more dependable. He introduced himself as Muninn, and offered him a nut. Blurb sat down with an audible clank from his armour.

"Thanks. I go by Blurb. Worked in the United Netherlands for over 10 years. Both sides. Where d'you both come from?"

EDIT: CLarity. Also, From the list of injuries I supposed you were scarred. No matter.

“Nowhere. What you do?” came the short reply as he gestured to one of the empty boxes, indicating that Blurb should take a seat.

the other hand was going trough several movements as holo-flicker danced form the wrist projector.

(What armour and scars? Did not know Muninn had any of either (ok there are a few scars but non are visible))

Jade watched the conversation quietly, she had arrived at about the same point as the one who called himself Blurb. But she didn't like doors. They were too obvious. The window was more fun. She had managed to stay unnoticed and was wondering when exactly she should announce herdelf to the others.

She just sat in the slightly damp corner, checking her arm.

Blurb, Munnin and the tramp. She decided on anylising her team for a while longer before making any introductions. They wouldn't see her if she didn't want them to.

'I hate working with new people. They make things so... difficult.' She thought to herself as one of the toxic needles slid silently back into the protective metal casing that used to be her arm.

A faint tapping sounded from beyond the doorway as a trio of metallic legs rapped on the floorboards. Moments later a luminous eye timidly peeked around the doorframe and surveyed the room. Satisfied, the drone scurried through the debris and settled in the shadows.

Uneven footsteps announced the coming of the next runner, the floorboards creaking under his staggered movements. He steadied himself against the wall as his head throbbed with the lingering vengeance of hard liquor. The newcomer cringed and cursed in Russian as his robotic accomplice gave a shrill bleep. He took a few moments to glance around him before deciding if the room didn’t stop spinning he damn well wasn’t going to attempt navigating the mass of toppled furniture.

Dimitri settled against the wall and closed his bloodshot eyes, though he kept careful watch on the others through his drone’s gaze.

From a far corner of the warehouse, you hear a devil rat scurry away, knocking crates aside as it moved.  Out of the shadows in the back corner of the warehouse a man emerges with two bodyguards.  He strolls over to where the majority of the team has gathered and scans the room.  In the dim lighting of the warehouse, you see a Caucasian ork in a charcoal grey suit.  He wears patent leather shoes, despite the dreary landscape he is meeting the runners in.

"Is this it?" he asks in a muddled Slavic accent.  He looks around the room, trying to see if someone more to his liking was present.  "I assume you are here for the job, yes?"

Confused by the arrival of the drunk Russian and his pet drone, Blurb was distracted enough to fail to notice the arrival of their purported employer.

Blurb turned to the ork and gave him a curt nod, awaiting the job description. And then the reward description, which was more interesting anyway.

The new arrival pleased Jade. Finally something might happen. There again, she should probably make her presence known, lest the mission start without her. Shrugging she directed her thoughts into the matrix, more specifically towards the drone that had come in with the latest runner. The curious beast was well worth investigating. Though she risked being caught she went for it anyway, discretely exploring it's defences, analysing her chances of using it to her own ends. Though ever cautious, so as not to let it or it's master detect her presence.

Satisfied, she withdrew and studied the small array of other items in the room that she was able to infiltrate.

'Well.' She thought, 'might aswell not keep them hanging.'

She tapped into the sensory feed between the man and his robot and pondered for a second on what exactly to do. She did her best to avoid any security measures in place and then on top of the robot's view of the room imposed a badly drawn banana shooting across the room, barely visible, but enough for him to see.

Then the text, in bright green writing.

"I'm watching you."

It stayed for just a brief moment, then she vanished, covering her trail and returning to her half-invisible state.

Cheerfully ignoring the nut-givers question and the other guys glare, he watched the little robot pet and its master walk in with some interest. He had an impulse to hug the cute little thing, but decided that it probably wouldn't do him any favours. Shrugging to himself he started to scrape plaster off the wall behind him with his fingernails, watching the client emerge from the other side of the building.

Before the man said anything more than a greeting, he moved to interrupt him.

"Question," Macaulay grinned, raising his hand up like one would in a classroom, "That cute little thing by the window who no-one noticed; she with us or can I kill her?"

Truth be told, he still might. It wasn't very respectable, creeping around fellow teammates like that. And Macaulay was all about respect.

Flicking a nut in her direction he turned towards the man with the bodyguards. “Talk.”

Her fun temporarily halted, Jade decided she might aswell make a reply.

"Trouble? It's no trouble at all. And who said anything about mates? I have a job to do here, and I don't want you lot getting in my way."

She staryed still, as always, still pondering on how the trampy one knew she was there whilst the robot and it's master stayed oblivious. Maybe he was actually asleep. And her name, no-one here should know how, how did Muninn know? Well, enough mysteries for now... She would get rid of them later. For now there was a mission briefing to collect.

She scanned the room for surveilance devices, noticing none that weren't linked to the new arrival and his bodyguard she talked.

"Well? What are we doing here then?"

Macaulay hummed in amusement at the woman, but didn't bother saying anything else. Letting go of the other guys shoulder he flashed the chick a toothy grin before returning back to the wall, looking quite happy with himself.

The man looked around at the bickering runners and scowled.

"I was under the impression that I was here to recruit professionals, but what I see before me are a bunch of disorganized sociopaths.  Perhaps I should take my business elsewhere?"

"What is the mission? Don't waste my time here."

Blurb waved the little girl away as the by now quite befuddled ork sank deeper and deeper into confusion. It wasn't uncommon for wannabe's to follow runners to a meeting. Real runners didn't sneak around at their own meetings.

"Just ignore her. Tell us the mission and the reward, and we'll be on our way."

suddenly a foot came through the back wall, four foot up, the toes waggled and then dissapeared back through the wall. they reappeared at the base of the wall a split second later and a section of the back wall crumbled away, in through the new door stepped a short well muscled oriental lad with tattoos all over his arms, dressed plainly in baggy black denim jeans.

"is this a private party or is anyone invited?" the newcommer asked "oh and by the way, the names secret, and I heard their might be some fun going down. So whats the gig?"

the stranger sat down on the newly made pile of rubble, and grinned, he'd made a fairly decent entrance.

"Hey Secret." Jade smiled. Finally, someone interesting had arrived. And he wasn't bad looking either. Trying to ignore the distraction she turned back to the man with the guards.

"Now can we PLEASE get this mission started. I'm tired of waiting, and bickering. Let's have some action here, eh? Then we'll see if you can afford to ignore me."

The ork turned back to his bodyguards and had a hushed conversation with them before turning back to the runners.

"Despite my better judgment, I will see if you can conduct yourselves with more professionalism than you've displayed here.  Luckily, the job is not rich in the need for subtlety.

"What I require is a two step process.  The Triads have something my associates want.  I need you to get it for us and afterwards, dispose of the man behind the theft of the merchandise.  I cannot reveal the nature of the goods, nor the man I need erased until I have your assurance that you will take the job.  I offer your group 10000¥ for the theft and an additional 15000¥ for the death of the Triad man, for 25000¥ to be divided amongst you as you see fit.  Are the terms acceptable?"

"I...have no idea!" Macaulay admitted, trying to hold in his laughter, "And I really don't care if they are or not, I'll take it anyway."

Clapping his hands together as one would do after everything's been decided, he looked around at the motley crew, his blue eyes full of mirth.

"If we're using a car, I call shotgun!"

This was going to be FUN.

The silent Russian had held his stillness in the gloom burdened shadows. He cared little fore these soldiers of fortune and was content to entertain the whispered thoughts of his mind.

"I'm watching you"

These words had drifted through his vision as the infuriated drone sparked and squaled. The intrusion was discourteous but Dimitri held no expectaions of manners or decency amoung these people. This hacker, this digital locksmith had so easily traversed his intricate web of defences. He was intrigued. The drone settled down and a fleeting smirk graced it's owner's lips. Perhaps this could be intersting after all.

He was torn from his thoughts by the squabble, their shouts pounding in his aching skull. He shifted slightly, the crackled leather of his atire brushing the faded stains that infested the wall. Slipping his hand into the folds of his jacket, Dimitri felt the reassuring touch of cold steel beneath his fingertips. He pushed the revolver aside and withdrew a simple flask and hastily drank the contents.

He sighed and broke his own silence, addressing the others as moisture still glistened on his lips.

"Looks like I'm your designated driver" he remarked with a thick Russian drawl

Muninn was ready to chime in with his 2¥ worth, when he received an incoming call on his commlink.  Keeping his conversation subvocalized, his features showed that some major had just transpired.  After hanging up, he grabbed his bag of almonds and stood up.  "Sorry, but I'm afraid I must decline.  Something important came up that I have to take care of."

The runner hurried out of the warehouse to allow his would-be coworkers take care of their business, while he took care of his.

With Muninn's departure, Mr. Johnson address the remaining runners.  "The offer stands.  I will not risk additional capital on a rag tag bunch such as this."

The ork's Russian accent grew as his frustration with the situation increased.  "You are to steal a truck and its contents.  It is an armored van, shipping guns and we want them.  The Triads have a warehouse in the Westway that ships all their weapons for the western sprawl."

Turning toward Secret, the Johnson said "Any merchandise outside of the truck that you acquire is yours to do with as you please.  And while we want to avoid killing civilians, feel free to clear the road of any Triad members you see.  There is one man in particular that must die.  His name is Felix Hong.  He is the underboss of the Acid Lotus Triad and has been causing us trouble lately.   If the Lodgemaster's right hand man were to disappear, there will be a power struggle within their organization which we can exploit."

"Do you think you can handle this task?"

One of the Johnson's bodyguards moves over toward Dimitri.  In a hushed voice, he asks in Russian, "Where in the Motherland do you hail from?"

“YOOOOOOOooookay! We’ve got the details, let’s get out of here and get to the job!” Macaulay shouts jubilantly, bouncing off the wall and making his way to the door, ignoring the bodyguard and slapping Dimitri on the shoulder in a friendly fashion, “I’m in the passenger seat, right-right? I called shotgun, afterall.”

Not really waiting for a reply, Macaulay half-walks, half-skips out of the room and towards whatever car or van awaited them outside, humming a little ditty to himself as he did.

The people in the room had seemed nice enough, if a little insecure. He quite liked them, all told, and was sure he could have a lot of fun with them.

‘Most need to learn how to be respectable though.’ He grinned to himself, his humming ditty breaking out into a more vocalised version, full of la’s and da’s.

As the situation spiralled downward into chaos, Blurb sighed. Itwas risky, running with such....irrational runners, but Blurb had no choice. He needed the contacts. Perhaps let the others rush ahead and get themselves killed. He put a friendly smile on his face.

Jade scowled and departed with the others. A job was a job, looks like these idiots would settle for 100¥ if they got to blow someone's brains out.

"As for you..." She said to the grinning Secret. "I won't come easy. So don't even think about it. You wanted the money, if it's a **** you're after try the slums." Her metal arm glinted meanacingly as she brushed him aside. A brief look back to implant the image of their employer in her mind was it, and she was out the door, back into the rotten air of the city.

Memories of the motherland swarmed through his mind, resurrecting nightmares he prayed would stay dead and buried. Shadows of the past flickered behind his eyes as the grisly visage of the ghouls returned. Their vacant stares still haunted his dreams and no amount of alcohol could stave off the memories. The fickle moment passed and Dimitri regained his composure. He was getting use to dealing with it now, a prospect that deeply appalled him. His bloodshot eyes peered over the rim of the dark shades and met the bodyguard’s inquisitive gaze.

“Dalnegorsk” he whispered and walked away before recognition set in. As he turned a mark upon his neck was exposed by the dim light. Scratches of dark ink formed an ashen skull adorned with raven wings and a familiar vacant stare. As Dimitri turned his back on his countrymen he could feel their eyes on the prison tattoo as if the burning needle was carving into his flesh once more.

He paused within the doorway and took a deep breath, inhaling the warehouse scents of rot and mildew before glance over his shoulder at Johnson.

“I’ll get the job done…even if it kills me”

He gave a low grunt of acknowledgment as Macaulay slapped him on the shoulder. Anyone this eccentric was either the best at what he does or a goddamn liability, Dimitri didn’t care either way. He left the company of the others and headed to his vehicle, accompanied by the shrill beeping of the drone as it scurried after him.

secrets mind raced, there were things going on here that he didn't understand, he didn't like it, the doubt, the thing that plauged even his well diciplined mind returned, he was no runner, he was a street ganger, he had so idealised, the near mythical runners in his head, from the half remembered stories heared as a child, that the all too human nature of them shocked him, even the ones that weren't human. still, he was a street ganger, and he doubted that the death that may await him at the end of the car journey, couldn't be much worse than the death that awaited back home. his eyes fell on Jade, at least he could have a laugh annoying the elf, if nothing else, THAT would be fun. he made his way to the waiting vehicle.

Macaulay was already in the passenger seat, the chair pushed back as far as it would go and his feet tapping out a tune on the dashboard. He wondered if he had broken into the car or the guy just left it unlocked or something.

Shrugging to himself, he produced a needle, a button and some thread. Taking his jacket off, he went about repairing it, being sure to put a thimble on his thumb, lest he prick it by accident. That would be bad.

“We need some music in here…” He mumbled to himself as tried to get the thread through the needle’s eye, wondering if he should kick the music-player to see if it’d start up.

after they all got in the car, secrets smile vannished, this was business this was serious, he had just begun to prepare for pre-battle meditation when a thought struck him.

"umm, an idea where we're going?" secret questioned, "i mean there are hundreds of warehouses in the westway, how will we know wich one it is?"

'Shadowrunning: Serious Business.' Macaulay thought to himself with a smile before he answered the youth behind him.

"Just my opinion, but maybe y'all shouldn't have followed me to the car while the meeting was still going on. The whole team dissapearing before the target location and drop-off point are given is a bit disrespectful, really."

He hummed a little and returned to his work.

"Not that it matters to me. I'm full of respect, afterall."

"not followed you out? and let you steal the car? anyway, i think we can simply drive around till we see the warehouse with armed guards, and we'll take right here as the drop off point, i just wondered if anyone knew for sure"

GOD-MOD TIME!

I'm frankly bored as hell with the complete and utter lack of pace this is going, so I'm officially closing of this chapter off the game.

We are now headed to the site, everybody's coming along, we know where all relevant locations are and Sildarax will now describe the situation near our target.

YOU CAN'T DO THAT, for me all the fun is in the little inter party interactions and background, when the party is ready to move on we move on, we've missed out far too much if we just jump from fight to fight.

I'm moving things forward this time... I'd like to see a higher post frequency myself so if we do go off on tangents the time taken to see if it will resolve itself won't be so long.  We'll see how this works out

After the meet and getting the last of the information required, the team headed fro the threshold of the Westway on the western shore of the Thames.  After the Druidic Council's rezoning, much of the southwest quarter of the city was deemed too hazardous for residential use and in places, too toxic even for regular business.  It didn't stop companies from erecting warehouses there in hopes of taking advantage of the cheap real estate.  However, the medical bills soon proved too much and those warehouses were hastily abandoned.

Now these warehouses house the poor who have nowhere else to turn.  The acidic haze that rolls up the Thames pools here.  Many of the residents here can't afford a simple respirator and would die young... if it weren't for the Acid Lotus Triad.  The Triad rules the area and supplies the locals with protection against the pollution, in exchange for their silence.  The Triads store everything here from guns to drugs and those caches are constantly being shuffled throughout the neighbourhoods to keep the cops out of their business.

The area known as Sand's End wasn't always the sty that it is today.  This river coast district was paved over in the 2040's to make way for a new harbour district that never came to be.  Instead it has become a collection of warehouses that smugglers and criminals use to store goods that get shipped up the Thames.  Rumours exist that a shaft into the undercity exists under the asphalt, but if anyone has located it, they aren't telling anyone.

The address provided by the Johnson leads off an industrial road called Bagley's Lane.  A light brown toxic fog curls through the series of warehouses before the team.  It is a complex of about a dozen small warehouses, all controlled by the Acid Lotus.  According to the J's intel, warehouse F is supposed to be where the guns are being stored.  While the fog keeps the visibility low, it hides the likely presence of Triad soldiers that would guard the grounds.

Leaping out the window of the vehicle, jacket fixed, Macaulay takes a deep breath of the crisp, foggy air.

“Wo-ACK,” He coughs a bit too loudly, though it only seems to increase his exuberance.

“MAN THAT’S GOOD! Fresh from the Thames! Brings a tear to your eye, it does. Several, if you count the acid in it.” He joked even louder, looking himself over to make sure his suit was close-to serviceable.

He decided it could use some ironing, but otherwise, everything looked to be in good order. He stuffed his hands merrily into his pockets and turned back to the guys and gal in the car/van thing, a huge grin on his face.

“Well, I’m good! Come on fellow Runners, to Warehouse F, and the goods within!”

Without waiting for the others, he began to merrily saunter into the mist, singing what sounded like an old Scottish ditty as he went.

Seeing Macaulay's merry attitude to the whole sneaking up quietly lark she decided to hang around the vehicle for a bit and let him go off like a beacon and get shot on his own.

"That suicidal idiot is not taking me with him." She muttered to anyone who may care to listen."

She also tied a rag from her top over her mouth and nose to keep out the smog, as they seemed to have no proper masks on them.

"Someone scan the area, thermal imaging, anyone? Let's find out where these guards are and how we can get round them. I don't want to pitch a few of us against an indefinite number of goons."

Blurb scrambled for his weapon and covered the lunatic Macaulay. Though annoying, and having already lost the element of surprise, it was unwise to let him die that easily.

As Macauly threw caution to the wind and trotted off into the fog, evidence of activity was growing increasingly prominent.  Quick conversation in Chinese could be heard echoing off the warehouses down the lot.  His cheerful exuberance failed to reveal the presence of nearby soldiers.

Red lines of light crossed from nearby warehouse rooftops, as Triad goons converged from nearby crossroads.  Those at the van could see the laser sight lines converging on Macauly's position, though the eccentric runner seemed totally obvious to the hostiles approaching his position.

Blurb searched out the origins of the beams, popping off 3 round bursts in each direction. If  they didn't hit. at least they would force the goon's heads down.

Sighing, Jade sprinted off into the shadows, hoping to find some cover, and also their target. She ducked into the nearest warehouse. Unsure of which one it was she hoped to find something which would tell her. She looked back to see if anyone else was coming, but couldn't see properly. If Macauly wanted to die, she wouldn't stop him. And what the heck was everyone else doing.

She scanned the place for surveilance gear, but found nothing. This warehouse must be abandoned.

"WHOA WHOA WHOA hold it, hold it right there!" Macaualy shouts back to Blurb, "Let's not get carried away with ourselves here."

Turning back to the...fog, Macaulay gives it his cheesiest smile, raising his hands.

"Forgive my associate, he's just a bit trigger-happy. If I could be so bold, I need to see your boss rather urgently, I have information and items that he may be very interested in.

He moves in a slow circle, hands still above his heads.

"Unarmed and everything, see? As for my colleages, please permit them to stay in the van. I promise they won't cause anymore trouble."

He waits a few seconds.

"Umm...I wasn't just talking to myself just then, right? Tell me that this is the Acid Lotus Triad area...someone?!"

Blurb: The laser sight lines scattered skyward as the bearers of those weapons either were struck, or dispersed to avoid the hail of gunfire.

Jade: Despite the warehouse being vacant, it did provide some insight into some of the security of the warehouses.  Small areas of pressure plates had been hastily erected near loading doors, as did a small series of motion detectors, localized to those areas.  Catwalks crossed the overhead areas and it seemed that the catwalks occassionally crossed between warehouses, allowing "security" to arrive from an overhead vantage point.

Macauly: Several more laser sights appear at ground level and point at Macauly's chest.  A single silhouette appears in the fog and strolls out into the open.  The Chinese man's features, while slightly masked by the haze, show lesions on his skin from the constant exposure to weak acids in the air.  He looks Macauly up and down and crosses his arms.

"Information, huh?  Perhaps if you were to tell me your 'valuable information', I can judge whether or not it's worthy of our master's attention."

"Aha, well then, that's the trick, isn't it?" Macaulay replied, rubbing the back of his head, "I obviously can't tell you EVERYTHING, because then there's no excuse I can give for you to gun me down. On the other hand, you can't let me see the 'head unless you know I have something valuable. On the other other hand, you might not be in a position where the information I give you is to be known."

Macaulay slapped his face in thought, lazily eying the multitude of beams focused on him.

"But...I'm a peaceful kinda guy. I'm sure you don't want to see this turning into a firefight either. Too much noise with nothing to gain. So I'll ask you something before I tell you anything, how much of a problem are the Vory to your operations right now?"

Macauly: "You wouldn't ask me that question, unless you already knew that those Russian bastards weren't a constant thorn in our side.  While we would love to take them down a notch, it will take something of decent importance to make me forgive this trespass..."

Dmitri: Being jacked into the vehicle, you are able to perceive the world through the van's sensor system.  Uninhibited by fog, you see the heat signatures of numerous Triad creeping along the rooftops of the warehouses, converging on the van.

The Triad man smirked as his shoulder twitched, possibly betraying a mediocre wire job beneath the surface.  "What would a gwailo like you know about politeness?  If we were on our home soil, you'd be entitled to my respect.  Here, we hand out as much respect as we receive.  A means to destroy some Vory is certainly worth something...what do you have in mind?"

'Hmmm.' Jade thought, 'if they're all like this it should be too hard to get into the one we want undetected by these. It's just the living, breathing guards we need to be worried about. And by the sound of things outside that could be fun.'

'However seeing as they're all distaracted right now, I may be able to get to the roof of this one and scout the place out.'

She let herself out into the matrix, a white tiger launched itself into the swarm of colours and patterns. It slowed as it reached the security, creeping softly, crouched low. The pressure pads she could avoid, their locations obvious to her, though she wouldn't be careless and miss any if she could help it. The motion sensors were a bit harder, she would have to disable them as she went past, or at least feed in a flase, negative input as she went past herself. The tiger morphed, it was now a snake, jet black. It's eyes fixed on the detectors, bright blue rays shot towards it, freezing them, but only for a few moments. Her real self set off past them, hoping she would be able to fool the security. It didn't seem that complex, but she had been fooled before. The snake was a tiger again, and it was breathing fire at a security code that had appeared. The flame engulphed it and she pressed on, up to the catwalks, then to find the roof entrance. Hopefully no-one outside would notice her, or at least, if on her team, would care. Working alone was normally so much easier. She could handle most things herself.

secret decided to join in, leaving the van he padded up to Macaulay, "you talk of respect, acid lotus, and the lack of it, you will respect a broken scale, as we repect all from our homeland" he spoke this in fluent traditional chinese "there is no need for those," he nodded to the gunmen, "if we were armed, we wouldn't have made our presence known, now the vory arseholes, my friend here has some information on these pain in the necks, so prehaps you'd be good enough to listen? or better yet take us to someone who has the authority to do something more than listen."

Jade: Your efforts in the Matrix pay off, as you slip passed the automated security undetected.  You slip up a ladder and pad lightly onto one of the rusted steel catwalks that crisscross the buildings.  The acidic air has taken their toll on these metal bridges, but their structural integrity seems sound.

Leaving the confines of the warehouse, you can see a little more of the landscape below.  Most of the activity is happening in the Southern portion of the lot.  Your presence has not been noticed thus far, but there is a lot of rooftop activity nearby, converging on the location of the team's van.  You can feel vibrantions in the metal as running soldiers near your position.

Macauly and Secret: The Triad man's smirk held firm.  "I am listening.  A very select few are allowed to speak to the upper tiers of our family.  I will judge if your information has value.  But my patience is limited, so please...be brief."

'Fighting like this is out of the question, open spaces just aren't my thing.' Jade thought. 'Maybe I'd be better hiding as these guys come past, is there even anywhere to hide up here?' She looked round searching for anything to stay out of sight behind in the fog. It was hard to see much at all. If she wasn't quick she'd have to go back down quickly, but what if they were going down. Down wasn't an option, it was either to hide up here, or at least get away from the footsteps. Maybe even creep around and take out some of these snipers, but the longer she wasn't noticed for the better.

Secret smiled broadly, "now now my good man, this is no time to be making enemies, we both know the russian scum are planning something, we all know they've started bringing in yet more mercs for thier jobs, but did you know they have offered up a bounty on whoever brings in the head of one of your higher ups?, i can't tell you which one of course, then there would be no reason for you not to kill us, and how do I know youwon't try for the bounty yourself? can you really be trusted? besides you have no reason not to trust us, had we any wish to harm you, would we really have just walked up and started talking to you?" secret bowed and offered his hand at the same time, mixing the traditions of china and englandin a friendly greeting.

"the names flamming fist, by the way."

Jade: Searching the nearby structures, Jade finds a piece of loose eaves near the warehouse roof just overhead.  Leaping up, she grabs the metal and pulls her legs up off the catwalk.  The metal groans under her weight, but seems to support her well enough.  A group of four Triad soldiers passes beneath her, heading into the warehouse she had recently emerged from.

Secret: The Triad lieutenant bowed, ignoring the handshake gesture.  He spoke in Chinese.  "The Vory are always after the upper echelons of our organization.  If they are targetting a specific member, that might be useful to know.  You have my attention."

Dmitri: Scanning his sensors, he noted the convergence of Triad soldiers around the area he had parked in.  "Comrades," he subvocalized over everyone's commlinks, "I think the Triad are biding their time until they can assault my van.  They are circling like sharks out here..."

"given the sensative nature of the information we have" secret said in a hushed voice, "you understand that it should be for the ears of only the person in question, if you would please take us to felix hong, we can give him the relevant information as to his own protection, we have reason to belive it is someone within the organisation itself that will carry out the attack, so you understand why we must speak with him in person."

Title: Re: Land of Hope and Glory? - Shadowrun Narrative Game

"I got ya." Jade replied softly, the Triad soldiers gathering around the men on the ground. She would have to do something. But things seemed reasonably stable on the ground. Killing the negotiations may be a politically inept move. "Are you guys gonna fight or just talk all day? Becase I have plenty of juicy targets up here and I want to know if I'm hitting them, or just staying hidden. Always helps to know, because these snipers have you well and truly covered. I could get you an opening if you're wanting a fight. But hey, keep 'em talking all day if you want."

She let herself into the matrix once more, the tiger crept silently through a sea of confusion. Security was tight, conversations between the Triad on their comm channels flowing thick and fast, if only she could understand it.

She opened a channel to Secret. "Mind if I tap you into a few of their security channels? Might give us some idea of when exactly they're going to murder us all. You can understand this stuff, the language is not one I speak. You can relay some of the vital information to us if you get the chance during your lovely little chat down there."

"Calm down? I'm perfectly calm, just bored. We did the talking with that Russian, these ones are for shooting, not talking with. But while you're at it I may aswell let you know what they're saying."

The tiger swallowed a channel of information between some of the gangmen and cloned the information, spewing it out again, the original went to it's intended target, the cloned copy weaving a different path, to Secret. Jade hoped they wouldn't be able to detect the lag in the communication. The Tiger dissapeared once more, covering it's tracks as well as was possible.

Secret: The information is split in purpose.  Some of the information is for getting gear loaded up for delivery, usually involving insulting the parentage of the workers.  Others are tactical coordinations of the soldiers.  It seems that the Triads have no intention of allowing you anywhere near their upper echelons and they are simply biding their time until they an execute an ambush from all sides.

"Sure thing hun, I'll have them running circles in no time."

Checking that the coast was clear Jade made her way back inside the warehouse, keeping an eye on any Triad soldiers taht were about. She found a nice looking group of four making their way upwards. Could be trouble, but that was a good thing now. She primed one of the toxic darts in her bionic arm and aimed at the leader of the group, making sure her escape route was free she took aim and shot at the man... even if it missed it's mark it was fine, so long as they noticed. All she needed was a distraction.

From there she headed stright back to her hiding place on the roof, hoping that it hit, but that no-one had seen her.

"Secret." She whispered quickly. "They should be distracted in here for a bit, could I tap you in again and let you cause some more confusion on the security channels, give them a bit of misleading information, otherwise it looks like I can't do much else from here but hide. There guys are everywhere, I can only distract the one warehouse."

The swirling colours once more surrounded Jade's consciousness, she kept her profile as low as possible while looking through the local comm channels, she targeted the highest security ones, and hoped she would get the right one...

Secret: "This is not the first time one of our masters has been sought for assassination.  We are quite skilled at protecting our own.  We will let Master Hong know to keep his head down and that will be sufficient.  We appreciate your information.  I recommend you leave us to our business now."

Jade: The dart you fire strikes home at the base of the neck of the intended target.  The soldier grasps the wound and finds an aerodynamic dart.  He scans the upper catwalks to find the trace of the intrusion, before wavering on his feet and collapsing in a heap.  A fevered round of Cantonese floods radio conversation, as the remaining three soldiers fan out to find the source of the attack.

The Matrix of the dockyard fans out across the field of your digital vision.  A crude rendering of the yard appears beneath the tiger as it let out a roar.  All the Matrix signals appeared as green dots, scattered around the property.  Isolating those belonging to your team, you find 25 other independant signals, representing each individual commlink outside of your own.  Scanning frequencies, you see a faint haze hovering over the node, representing the constant hum of radio chatter.  Focussing in further, six of the dots turn red and link together in a closed circle.  Apparently, these are registered together as a miniature PAN (Personal Area Network) and have linked their commlinks' security together for added fortification against intrusion.  All members of the PAN encircle a warehouse icon of the node.  Hovering over the node, the warehouse is labelled "Warehouse F - Owner:  Unlisted - Contents:  None".

"Sure thing, this is gonna be fun."

She directed her concentration on the signal coming from just near Secret. Sure enough a discrete channel was opened between it and another, the source ofwhich she began to trace, as fast as possible so as not to lose it, most sense of security was gone by now, they knew what was happening most likely, but that didn't stop the mission from being completed.

"Hey guys, you gonna move or all just stand there like dorks and get shot?" She said over a channel between the entire team.

As Secret heads away, he notices a distinct lack of windows in the warehouse walls.  The only cover around were a few rotting crates and, of course, the fog.

As you turn your back, you hear over the intercepted comm signal, the Triad lieutenant says, "Take them..."
